Cyclone Sitrang crossed over Bangladesh by noon time today. After it started landfall around 9 last night, the eye of the cyclone made landfall in Bangladesh around midnight.

The government had made extensive arrangements to deal with the cyclone but damages to houses, property, electric poles and embankments were reported from the coastal area.

AIR Correspondent reports, Cyclone Sitrang damaged more than 10,000 houses, 6,000 hectares of cropland, and 1,000 fishing enclosures when it hit Bangladesh on Monday night and early morning on Tuesday. Though reports about death are still coming in, official news agency BSS reported that 12 people were killed in the cyclone.

Power supply for more than 80 lakh people was disrupted by the cyclone which is now being restored across the affected area.

The Government had evacuated close to 1 million people from the 15 coastal districts as the cyclone advanced towards Bangladesh over the last two days. Most of the people have now returned to their homes as it weakened very quickly after hitting the coastal districts last night.

Meanwhile, flight services from the three airports in the coastal areas at Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar and Barisal resumed from noon on Tuesday.

The ferry and launch services were also started after remaining suspended for close to 36 hours. Maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra have lowered the danger signal 6 and 7. They have now been advised to keep hoisting the local cautionary signal number 3.
