The Communist Party of India on Friday strongly criticised the repeated increase in prices of LPG, petrol, diesel and CNG, alleging that the hikes were imposing a severe burden on ordinary citizens and worsening economic distress across the country.
In a statement, the party said the continuous rise in fuel prices had increased the cost of transport, food items, medicines, agriculture and other essential commodities, directly affecting household budgets and pushing the poor and middle classes into hardship. The CPI alleged that while people were being forced to bear the burden of inflation and austerity, the Union Government was protecting corporate interests.
The party also linked the fuel price rise to what it described as the “failure” of the foreign policy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It claimed that India’s decision to reduce energy imports from Russia and Iran under pressure from the United States had weakened the country’s energy security and exposed it to global market shocks.
Accusing the government of favouring “crony corporates”, the CPI said the burden of rising fuel costs was falling on farmers, workers and common citizens while a handful of big business groups continued to prosper. The party demanded an immediate rollback of fuel price hikes and called for measures to protect people from inflationary pressures.
