The Communist Party of India today organised a massive and highly successful Human Chain from CPI Headquarters, Ajoy Bhawan to ITO, New Delhi, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Thousands came together, joined hands and stood in solidarity with millions of citizens whose names have been struck off electoral rolls through the Special Intensive Revision (SIR). The massive participation reflected the growing public outrage against the systematic disenfranchisement of citizens and the assault on the fundamental democratic right to vote. The CPI and mass organisations unequivocally demanded the immediate rollback of SIR. Addressing the gathering, CPI General Secretary D. Raja said, “Gyanesh Kumar has lost the confidence of the people, and his continued occupation of the office of Chief Election Commissioner is a grave threat to the credibility of our electoral democracy. He must resign.”

The Human Chain also strongly condemned the denotification of Jantar Mantar as a protest site and demanded its immediate reopening. The attempt to shut down a historic space of democratic dissent is yet another manifestation of the growing intolerance towards people’s movements and the systematic suppression of the right to protest. The CPI asserted that democracy cannot survive when citizens are denied both their electoral rights and their right to raise their voices against injustice. The Election Commission of India, entrusted with the constitutional responsibility of conducting free and fair elections, is facing an unprecedented crisis of credibility. SIR must be rolled back, Jantar Mantar must be reopened, and Gyanesh Kumar must resign in the larger interest of democracy and constitutional accountability.

CPI General Secretary D. Raja, National Secretariat members Amarjeet Kaur, P. Sandosh Kumar MP, Rama Krushna Panda, Dr. Girish Sharma, Annie Raja, K. Prekash Babu and K. Ramakrishna; CPI MP PP Suneer, CPI Delhi Secretary and National Executive member Prof. Dinesh Varshney; NFIW General Secretary Nisha Sidhu; AIKS President Rajan Kshirsagar; BKMU Secretary V.S. Nirmal; AIYF President Raushan Kumar Sinha; AIYF General Secretary Sukhjinder Mahesari; and AISF President Viraaj Devang participated in the Human Chain along with thousands of leaders, cadres and activists of the CPI and mass organisations. The overwhelming response and enthusiastic participation made the programme a powerful demonstration of people’s determination to defend democracy, safeguard the right to vote and resist every attempt to undermine the constitutional foundations of the Republic. The CPI calls upon all democratic forces, political parties, civil society organisations and citizens to intensify the struggle against vote chori and for a transparent, independent and accountable Election Commission.
