The proposed first international marathon was marred by disruptions in Kashmir as protesters clashed with police at Kashmir University where the marathon was scheduled to take off in the morning. The clashes began when organizers of the marathon were confronted by youngsters questioning their purpose and selection process.

The 21-kilometer half-marathon was scheduled to go around famed Dal Lake to spread awareness on healthy lifestyle and raise awareness about the need to conserve dying water bodies. Witnesses said youth shouted slogans in favour of freedom and pelted rocks on the forces guarding the venue in the varsity.

A local FM radio station in collaboration with government departments was organizing the marathon attended by scores of children and students from various educational institutions. Several international professional athletes including those from Kenya had gathered at the venue. There was huge enthusiasm among participants especially the locals. Some participants had come along-with their families to take part.

PRO Kashmir University said that the University space was provided only as a venue and varsity was not part of the organizing the event.
