Padma Awardee and Noted filmmaker Shyam Benegal said on Monday that the censorship should be abolished. Mr Benegal was talking yesterday at a session of ‘Meet The Director’ at the 46th edition of the International Film Festival of India which is underway in Panaji. He said that making films in keeping with social sensibilities in their environment don’t require censorship.

He said, censorship has no real purpose to come in the way of expression. He further said that filmmakers have been disassociating themselves with rural India and rural films have gone out of our consciousness. Mr Benegal, who has been credited with bringing alternative cinema, is best known for his movies like Ankur, Bhumika and Junoon.
