British lawmakers are to debate a petition signed by about 1.7 million people who oppose a planned state visit by US President Donald Trump. The Parliament has decided to hold a debate on the issue on 20th of this month.
Petitions with more than 100,000 signatures are considered for parliamentary debate. Prime Minister Theresa May announced last week that Queen Elizabeth had invited Trump to visit the country later this year as part of a state visit.Trump’s decision to ban the entry of people from 7 countries in the Middle East and Africa has prompted demonstrations across Britain. Some Conservative Party lawmakers also say they will not allow Trump to make a speech in the Parliament.
Meanwhille, Prime Minister May has said, the US is Britain’s close ally and has a special relationship, and the state visit is going forward.
