Bangladesh has urged the United States to expedite the deportation of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s killer Rashed Chowdhury to Bangladesh. State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam in his meeting with the US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy R Sherman in Washington told her that the issue was of utmost importance to the people of Bangladesh and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina herself.
State Minister Alam also emphasised the conclusion of an extradition treaty between Bangladesh and the USA as early as possible. Shariar Alam also urged the US government to withdraw sanctions against the elite law enforcement agency of Bangladesh Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and its senior officials as soon as possible.
He thanked the US for its generous support to Bangladesh by providing nearly 88 million Covid-19 vaccine doses and humanitarian aid to the Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh. He expressed the willingness of the Bangladesh government to work more closely with the US on the issue of climate change and migration, said a press release by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA).
Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman lauded the contribution of Bangladeshi peacekeepers in global peacekeeping. She also appreciated Bangladesh’s leadership role in climate change and encouraged Bangladesh to join the Global Methane Pledge prior to COP27. The US State Department in a press statement reaffirmed the importance of promoting human rights and holding free, fair and peaceful elections in Bangladesh.
