The Bangladesh government has decided to rename several major medical universities, removing the names of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and former premier Sheikh Hasina from their titles.

During a meeting on Thursday at the chief adviser Muhammad Yunus’ office in Dhaka, the advisory council gave final approval to the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025, renaming it Bangladesh Medical University.

The decision is pending legal vetting by the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division. Additionally, Sheikh Hasina Medical University, Khulna will now be called Khulna Medical University, and Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Medical University, Sylhet will be renamed Sylhet Medical University, following amendments to their respective ordinances.

The move is part of the interim government’s broader reforms aimed at simplifying institutional names and restructuring the medical education system in Bangladesh. The decision comes amid a series of changes introduced by the administration since taking office last year.
