Aus Open: Zverev advances to final after Djokovic retires with injury

In Australian Open Tennis, second seed German Alexander Zverev has advanced to the Men’s Singles final after seventh seed Novak Djokovic retired during their semifinal match at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne today. In a shocking move, the 10-time Australian Open champion, Djokovic was forced to retire due to an injury after losing the first set 7-6. Before the match, the upper left leg of the Serbian ace was heavily taped after he hurt it during his quarterfinal match against Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz. In the second semi-final, defending champion and top seed Italian Jannik Sinner will face 21st seed Ben Shelton of the United States later in the day. The title clash of Men’s Singles is scheduled for Sunday.

In the Women’s Singles final tomorrow, World No. 1 Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka will face 19th seed Madison Keys of the United States in Melbourne and will seek to become the first woman since 1999 to win three consecutive Australian Open titles.

Meanwhile, home favourite pair Olivia Gadecki and John Peers has clinched the Mixed Doubles title. The Australian duo defeated compatriots Kimberly Birrell and John-Patrick Smith 3-6, 6-4, 10-6 in the final at Melbourne Park today.

In Men’s Doubles, Britain’s Henry Patten and Harri Heliovaara of Finland will face third seeds Italian pair of Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori in the final tomorrow.

In the Women’s Doubles final, the third-seed pair of Latvia’s Jeļena Ostapenko and Hsieh Su-wei of Taiwan will take on top seeded duo Taylor Townsend of the US and Czech player Kateřina Siniaková.
