In first ever cross-border operation, special forces of the army in coordination with the air force today carried out a surgical strike inside Myanmar, killing nearly 20 insurgents of the groups believed to be responsible for the deadly ambush in Manipur that killed 18 soldiers.

Elite commandos of the army went a few kilometers inside the Myanmar territory to destroy two camps of insurgents hiding there after their attacks in Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh last week by NSCN(K) and KYKL outfits. The Army today said it has killed suspected militants behind the attack on security personnel on June 4th in Chandel in Manipur where 20 soldiers were killed.

Speaking to reporters in New Delhi, ADG (Military operations) Major General Ranveer Singh said specific intelligence inputs were received that the militants were planning further attacks. Major General Singh said the Indian Army engaged two separate groups of insurgents along the Indo-Myanmar border and significant casualties have been inflicted on them.

He said Army looks forward to working with Myanmar to combat terrorism.
