AMN / NEW DELHI

In a landmark move for medical education in India, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, has introduced the da Vinci Surgical Robot at its Skills, E-Learning and Telemedicine (SET) Facility. This makes AIIMS the first government medical college in the country to offer training on the advanced robotic surgical platform.

The da Vinci system, installed under a memorandum of understanding with Intuitive Surgical, positions AIIMS Delhi as the only institution in India to house two dedicated robotic training systems. The SET facility already features the Hugo robotic trainer by Medtronic, enabling a comprehensive, hands-on learning environment for students, residents, nurses, and faculty.

Speaking at the inauguration, AIIMS Director Dr. M. Srinivas highlighted the institute’s growing role in advancing surgical innovation. He noted that robotic surgery training, once accessible only overseas, is now available domestically through AIIMS. The SET facility provides state-of-the-art simulators and training tools, supporting skill development across a range of surgical disciplines including urology, gynaecology, general surgery, surgical oncology, and head and neck surgery.
