The 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts case convict Yakub Memon, whose curative petition was dismissed by the Supreme Court yesterday, submitted a mercy petition to the Maharashtra Governor last evening, in a last-ditch effort to prevent execution of his death sentence. His lawyer Advocate Anil Gedam told reporters in Nagpur that the only convict on death row in this case handed over his mercy petition to the authorities of the Nagpur Central Prison, where he is currently lodged. Meanwhile, the State Administration is gearing up for executing the capital punishment on July 30 after issuance of the death warrant by the Special Anti-terror Court in Mumbai.

Memon is lodged in a solitary cell in the high security Nagpur Central Prison since his conviction. He was held guilty of distributing arms, ammunitions and explosives along with funding the terrorist activities and sentenced to death by a TADA Court in Mumbai on July 27, 2007. The decision was upheld by the Supreme Court bench in 2013. The review petition in this case was subsequently rejected by the Apex Court and the mercy petition was also turned down by President Mr. Pranab Mukherjee.
