The Supreme Court today issued notice to the Centre and four states in connection with prevelance of female genital mutilation (FGM) among Bohra community in Muslim community.
A three judge bench of the Apex Court headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Jagdish Singh Khehar and also comprising Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and D Y Chandrachud issued notice to the Central government and also to four states, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Delhi and asked for a detailed reply.
Apex Court was hearing the petition filed by a woman lawyer Sunita Tiwari. The petitioner in her petition, sought a direction to the respondents to implement the resolutions passed in December 2012, by the United Nations General Assembly regarding the rights Iof the children banning FGM or Khatna or female circumcision of which India is a signatory.
Sunita also sought a direction to the respondents to put a complete ban on the illegal and inhuman practices of FGM as the same was being violatiolve of the fundamental rights guaranteed under Article 14& 21 and article 39 of the Directive Principles of state policy (DPSP) of the Indian Constitution.
