At least 100 homes were destroyed and about 50 hectares of woodland ravaged in a wildfire in the coastal city of Valparaiso in Chile,.

Chilean Interior Minister Mahmud Aleuy said in Santiago that 19 people were injured in the fire and evacuated hundreds of people from the area.

National Emergencies Office said in a statement that hundreds of fire fighters along with water-dumping airplanes and helicopters were battling the blaze. President, Michelle Bachelet said on Twitter that emergency protocol have been activated. She expressed solidarity with the affected people.

Electricity providers said, they had cut power to nearly 48,000 customers as a precautionary measure. Thousands of tourists come every year to the tourist city of Valparaiso to stroll its narrow cobbled streets and ride cable cars up the steep hills.
