Under the influence of upper air cyclonic circulation, heavy to very heavy rainfall and thundershowers are occurring at most places in Odisha since yesterday. The past 24 hrs western Odisha town Sambalpur received the highest rain of 150 mm followed by 121 mm in Hirakud. The local Met office said, the system is also likely to trigger heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places with extremely heavy rainfall at one or two places in the state during next 24 hours
Farmers who are worried for rain deficit have reasons to cheer ahead of the largest agrarian festival in the state Nuakhai to be celebrated tomorrow. Odisha has received around 14 per cent less rainfall than normal so far this monsoon that begins from mid-June and will continue till end of this month. Weatherman has predicted heavy rain likely to lash most parts in the next three days and the current spell will cover up the deficit. Meanwhile, in a tragic incident, a six-year-old girl was killed and two others of the family were injured in Hirakud town in Sambalpur district when a wall of their house collapsed due to the low pressure-induced heavy rains yesterday.
