In a bid to review party in the state, the Congress party today appointed Rajya Sabha MP  and and film star Raj Babbar as Uttar Pradesh Pardesh Congress president.

The announcement was made by party leader Ghulam Nabi Azad during a press conference here.

Azad, however, refused to announce party’s chief minister face in Uttar Pradesh, where elections will take place next year.

“Raj Babbar appointed new Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee President” Congress announced through a tweet.

Born in 1952 in Agra Raj Babbar entered politics in 1989 joining Janata Dal led by V. P. Singh. He later joined Samajwadi Party and was elected as the Member of Parliament of India for three times.

From 1994 to 1999 he was a member of Rajya Sabha. He was re-elected in the 14th Lok Sabha elections for the second term in 2004. He was suspended from Samajwadi Party in 2006.

Later he joined Indian National Congress in 2008 and was elected for fourth term as Member of Parliament in 2009, by defeating Dimple Yadav wife of Akhilesh Yadav and daughter-in-law of Mulayam Singh Yadav. In 2014 Lok Sabha elections, he contested from Ghaziabad and lost to General V K Singh. Currently he a Rajya Sabha member from Uttrakhand.
