The Governor’s rule has been imposed in Jammu and Kashmir today, says Minister of state in Prime Minister’s Office PMO Dr. Jitendra Singh.

“For now Governor’s rule has been imposed in Jammu and Kashmir,” Singh told reporters here.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister’s post was left vacant after the incumbent Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed passed away due to multiple organ failure.

Governor NN Vohra using his special powers issued a notification in this regard.

This followed the reluctance of PDP president Mehbooba Mufti to take over as the Chief Minister till the mourning period for her father, the former Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, is over.

Governor NN Vohra had written letters to the PDP and the BJP, seeking their position on government formation, but no reply came.

Due to the delay in response from the two parties, Governor’s rule was imposed as a constitutionally unprecedented situation emerged because the most probable candidate for chief ministership, Mehbooba, is unwilling to take oath before the mourning period for her father ends. The mourning period for her father will be over on Sunday, the fourth day, which is the traditional period of mourning among Muslims.
