India says it is making fundamental changes in its transport system to improve energy efficiency and cut carbon emissions. Talking to media in Paris following a talk programme to highlight the steps taken by New Delhi of its own in this direction, an Indian negotiator said that the government is focusing on railways for the goods and people as it is 40 percent more energy efficient.
The negotiator said, on two dedicated caridors, the work is underway and on others, study reports have been accomplished.
A senior official of the railways said that the target of mixing of five per cent bio fuel in its energy mix will be achieved much in time. He said, LED bulbs will be fitted in all the new coaches.
He said that mass transport system including metro trains is also being encouraged in big cities.
Transport sector has been found to be one of the biggest emitters of greenhouse gases in India’s major cities.
