Punjab, Director General of Police Sumedh Singh Saini has been removed from his post. Mr. Saini faced criticism over law and order situation in the wake of protests over desecration of the Sikh holy book. Director of Vigilance Bureau Suresh Arora takes his place. Saini has been given the new charge as Chairman of Police Housing Corporation. The state police had come under attack after two persons were killed in firing during protests in Faridkot.

On first sight the new development of replacing the Police Chief by Punjab Government seems to be a bid to defuse the current tension in the state. This decision came after a long meeting of leaders of ruling Shiromani Akali Dal and senior members of Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee at Chandigarh late last night.

Mr. Suresh Arora new DGP of Punjab Police has an unblemished service record and had played a crucial role in fighting terrorism in the state. He had remained Police Chief at various districts of Punjab and has good equity among the people of the state.

In his first press conference in the evening today new DGP said his foremost responsibility is to build confidence in the people by maintaining law and order and bringing transparency in work. He also sought peoples help to bring peace in the state. DGP appealed people not to indulge any activity which causes difficulties to the general public.
