The Ministry of Railways has stepped up preparations to manage the heavy passenger rush during the Diwali and Chhath festivals. As part of its crowd-management measures, the Railways is operating 18,000 special trains, deploying additional Railway Protection Force personnel and installing Artificial Intelligence-enabled cameras at major railway stations.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated this while inspecting the passenger holding areas at New Delhi Railway Station last evening. Mr Vaishnaw said that New Delhi Railway Station handles over five lakh passengers on an average day, while the daily footfall rises to around eight lakh during peak periods.
Mr Vaishnaw further said that more than 700 Artificial Intelligence-enabled cameras have been installed at New Delhi Railway Station to monitor passenger movement and ensure effective crowd management. He added that separate holding areas have been set up this year for reserved and unreserved passengers to ensure their convenience and prevent overcrowding at the station.
The Minister also said that similar holding areas have been established at several major railway stations across the country that witness heavy passenger traffic during the festive season.
