India will host the 12th BRICS Parliamentary Forum on October 26-27, bringing together parliamentary leaders from member and partner countries to discuss people-centric development, artificial intelligence, global governance and sustainability, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said on Thursday.
The forum will be held at the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan and inaugurated on October 26. Addressing a press conference at Parliament House, Birla said the gathering would strengthen India’s parliamentary diplomacy and provide a platform for dialogue and consensus-building on shared challenges.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the event and interact with leaders of visiting delegations, he said.
The forum’s overarching theme is “Strengthening Parliaments for People-Centric Development.” Deliberations will focus on four areas: resilience, innovation, cooperation and sustainability.
Discussions will examine how parliaments can strengthen institutions, promote human-centred applications of artificial intelligence and digital technologies, make global governance more representative, and advance inclusive and sustainable development.
The gathering will include presiding officers and parliamentary leaders from BRICS member and partner countries, Union Ministers, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh, presiding officers of state legislatures, MPs and other dignitaries.
A special meeting of chairpersons of international affairs committees from participating parliaments will focus on parliamentary diplomacy, capacity-building and the exchange of best practices.
Bilateral and multilateral interactions, parliamentary friendship group meetings and parallel sessions will form part of the programme. Secretaries of the participating delegations will meet on October 25 to finalise the forum’s joint statement.
The Vice-President will host a banquet for visiting dignitaries. Delegates will also visit Parliament and participate in cultural activities in Delhi. The two-day forum will conclude on October 27.
