The International Monetary Fund’s policy-setting committee has warned that wars, trade tensions, energy disruptions and rising debt threaten global economic stability, despite better-than-expected growth resilience.

In a statement after its 54th meeting in Bangkok yesterday, the International Monetary and Financial Committee (IMFC) said ongoing conflicts, supply chain disruptions and geopolitical tensions could drive up commodity prices and worsen food and energy insecurity, particularly in vulnerable countries. The committee flagged high public debt, rising bond yields and refinancing pressures as key risks to financial stability, warning that governments have less capacity to absorb further shocks.

It also noted that rapid advances in artificial intelligence could boost productivity and investment but may amplify existing economic and financial vulnerabilities. The IMFC called for credible fiscal policies, central bank independence and stronger international cooperation to address trade tensions, global imbalances and sovereign debt challenges.
