A bipartisan group of US Senators has questioned the legality of President Donald Trump’s decision to allow diesel imports from Russia. The Senators argued that the decision contravened a 2022 law banning such trade until Moscow ends its war in Ukraine. They also said the Trump administration had failed to consult Congress or submit an explanation justifying the decision, as required by law.
Following a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday, Trump announced that he had reached a deal with Russia to immediately supply 300,000 tonnes of diesel to the United States and the global market.
Trump’s decision came weeks after the US Congress overwhelmingly passed the Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act, which empowers the President to impose sweeping sanctions on Moscow and 100 per cent tariffs on its five largest trading partners in the oil and gas sector.
