India’s retail inflation accelerated to 5.54 per cent in September on an annual basis, remaining above the Reserve Bank of India’s target of four per cent for the fourth consecutive month this year. Last month’s inflation reading was higher than the 4.83 per cent recorded in August.

According to data released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, inflation in rural areas increased to 6.08 per cent, while in urban regions it rose to 4.88 per cent. Food prices continued to remain a key driver of inflation. The food inflation rate, based on the All India Consumer Food Price Index, surged 7.74 per cent last month from 5.97 per cent in August.

As per the data, the increase in inflation in September was mainly attributed to rising prices in personal care, social protection, restaurants and accommodation services, food, beverages, transport and intoxicants. The top items showing high inflation at the all-India combined level included Onion, Silver Jewellery, Ginger, Garlic and Lemon. In contrast, items with the lowest inflation included Potato, Tomato, Car, Lady’s finger and Coconut.
