Belgian-born scientist Francis Halzen has won the Nobel Prize in Physics for his contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin.
The 82-year-old Halzen led an international team that developed IceCube, a neutrino detector at the South Pole that has opened a new way of studying the universe. Neutrinos are tiny, nearly massless particles produced by stars and other cosmic events.
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced the award in Stockholm. The prize carries 12 million Swedish kronor, or about 1.2 million dollars.
