BRAC University, a leading private university in Bangladesh, has alerted police after receiving an email threatening multiple bomb attacks at its Dhaka campus on Tuesday, October 6.
The threatening email was received at around 6.44pm on Sunday, October 4. It claimed that a “mass bombing” would take place at around 11am on Tuesday at the university’s campus on Pragati Sarani in Dhaka.
The university subsequently filed a general diary, or GD, with Badda Police Station.
Kazi Md Nasirul Amin, officer-in-charge of Badda Police Station, said police had been investigating the matter since receiving the complaint. “We have been working on the matter since receiving the complaint,” he said. The email also warned: “Know that none of you will be able to stop what is about to happen.”
Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Gulshan Division deputy commissioner Mohammad Ruhul Kabir Khan said there was “no reason to panic” and that the Detective Branch’s cyber team was investigating the threat.
BRAC University public relations official Fatius Fahmid said the authorities informed law enforcement agencies immediately after receiving the email.
“We received the email yesterday and then informed law-enforcing agencies. We are receiving all necessary cooperation,” he said, adding that the university was prioritising the safety of students and others on campus.
