The West Bengal chapter of the Association for Protection of Civil Rights (APCR) has released its fact-finding report on the death of Akbar Mondal, calling for a transparent investigation, accountability and support measures for the bereaved family. The report is titled “Allegations, Evidence and Communal Context: Investigating the Death of Akbar Mondal.”
Akbar Mondal, a resident of Panisol village in Bankura district, worked as an itinerant trader, travelling from place to place to sell goods. He died following a violent incident that took place on 9 June 2026 in Supordiya village of Purulia district.
An APCR fact-finding team visited Panisol village on 17 June and met family members of the deceased, local residents, social representatives and concerned authorities. During the visit, the team reviewed available information and examined material related to the incident.
According to the report, the dispute allegedly began over payment for goods and later escalated into violence. Akbar Mondal was reportedly subjected to severe assault that ultimately resulted in his death. Police have arrested the accused, identified as Bishwanath Mahato, and further investigation is underway.
The fact-finding team stated that preliminary findings indicate the incident originated as a commercial dispute before turning into fatal violence. The report also raised concerns about the safety and vulnerability of itinerant traders, particularly those belonging to minority communities.
According to APCR, Akbar Mondal’s death is not only a personal tragedy for one family but also raises broader questions about the protection and security of vulnerable and informal workers.
The organisation noted that Mondal was the sole earning member of his family and that his death has left his widow, children and other dependents facing severe financial hardship.
APCR has demanded that the case be investigated in an impartial, transparent and evidence-based manner. It urged authorities to ensure witness protection, preserve all available evidence and carry forward legal proceedings with fairness and integrity.
The organisation also recommended immediate financial relief for the family, adequate compensation, access to stable livelihood opportunities, educational support for the children and psychological counselling services.
Further, APCR called upon the government to introduce stronger measures for the protection of itinerant traders and address security concerns faced by vulnerable sections of society.
The organisation said that justice in the matter should be guided by facts, transparency and the rule of law. APCR added that it will continue monitoring developments in the case and advocate for accountability, justice and protection of fundamental rights.
