A powerful explosion at a steel plant in China’s Inner Mongolia autonomous region has killed at least two people and left five others missing. According to the local authorities, the blast occurred last evening at a rare earth steel plate factory in Baotou city. A pressurized storage tank designed to hold steam and high-temperature water exploded in the factory.
The explosion sent thick plumes of smoke into the air and was strong enough to shatter windows in nearby homes. Sixty-six people were taken to the hospital for treatment. Three are reported to be in critical condition. Rescue teams from across the autonomous region and Baotou city, including firefighters, police, and specialized medical units, remain at the site as the search for the missing workers continues.
