Prime Minister Narendra Modi has embarked on a five-day visit to Nigeria, Brazil and Guyana today. In his departure statement, the Prime Minister said this will be his first visit to Nigeria, which is India’s close partner in the West African region.
Mr. Modi noted that his visit will be an opportunity to build upon the Strategic Partnership, which is based on a shared belief in democracy and pluralism. He also expressed his eagerness to meet the Indian community in Nigeria, as well as the Nigerian people who have sent him welcome messages in Hindi.
Mr Modi will also attend the 19th G-20 Summit as a Troika member. He highlighted that India’s successful Presidency last year had elevated the G-20 to a people’s G-20 and incorporated the priorities of the Global South into the agenda. Stating that this year Brazil has built upon India’s legacy, Mr. Modi expressed his anticipation of meaningful discussions in line with the vision of “One Earth, One Family, One Future.
The Prime Minister added that he would also use this opportunity to engage in discussions on furthering bilateral cooperation with several other world leaders.
Mr. Modi said that his visit to Guyana, at the invitation of President Mohamed Irfaan Ali, will be the first ever visit of an Indian Prime Minister in over 50 years.
During the meeting, both leaders will exchange views on giving strategic direction to their unique relationship, which is based on shared heritage, culture and values. Mr. Modi will also pay his respects to one of the oldest Indian diasporas, who migrated more than 185 years ago, and engage a fellow democracy while addressing their Parliament.
During this visit, the Prime Minister will also join leaders from the Caribbean partner countries for the 2nd India-CARICOM Summit. Mr Modi said that the Summit will enable these countries to renew historical ties and expand cooperation into new domains.
