in Myanmar, typhoon Yagi-triggered flooding has forced more than 230,000 people to flee their homes. The capital, Naypyidaw, is among the areas worst hit. The country’s ruling junta has requested foreign aid to mitigate the impact. The military said that the floods and landslides triggered by typhoon Yagi have killed at least 33 people. Myanmar’s military has previously blocked humanitarian assistance from abroad. In related developments, the impact of the storm has been similarly severe in northern Thailand. At least 10 people have been killed due to flash floods and landslides caused by the typhoon.
Asia’s most powerful storm this year, Typhoon Yagi, has already swept through Vietnam, the Chinese island of Hainan, and the Philippines last weekend. In Vietnam’s northern region, Typhoon Yagi and the consequent landslides and floods have left 254 dead and 82 missing. Rescuers are working around the clock to evacuate residents who have been stranded by the sudden onset of these disasters.
