The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) has filed a writ petition in the Madras High Court seeking a direction to the Election Commission of India (ECI) to issue notice, and call for an explanation from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, for election campaign speeches he has made on communal lines.
A mention was made before a summer vacation bench of Justices A.D. Jagadish Chandira and R. Kalaimathi on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, stating that the High Court Registry was refusing to number the writ petition just because the allegations had been made against the Prime Minister.
The petition said that since April 21, unwanted comments were made by the Prime Minister in several election rallies. It was also said that despite many complaints, the Election Commission did not take any direct action against the Prime Minister. Instead of questioning the Prime Minister, the matter was hush-hushed by issuing a show cause notice to the BJP National President.
According to the report, the petition holds the Prime Minister “personally responsible” for the hate speeches, saying Modi alone is responsible for these inflammatory remarks, derogatory and divisive speeches.
“This laxity of the Election Commission will send a wrong message to the citizens of the country and will raise questions about the integrity of the entire election process of the country,” the petition said.
