over his handling of the issue of corruption that has marred the image of the party ahead of the assembly elections in crucial northern state of Uttar Pradesh.

According to highly placed party sources the group though small in number is headed by party general secretary Digvijay Singh is trying to mount pressure on the leadership to usher change at the helm in the government, which is evident from the statements former Madhya Pradesh chief minister has been often making suggesting that Rahul Gandhi be made Prime Minister.

However, the anti-Singh lobby is unclear on the alternative of the current Prime Minister. Some of the members of the group advocate that finance minister Pranab Mukherjee is most suitable choice for new Prime Minister, whereas others in the Congress Working Committee who favour status quo don’t favour Mukherjee as the alternative of Singh on many grounds.

They argue elevating Mukherjee to the top slot in the government could be harmful for the promotion of Rahul Gandhi as future Prime Minister of India.

The anti-Singh lobby hold him responsible for allowing social activist like Anna Hazare and other members of so-called civil society and Yoga guru Ramdev to openly challenge not only the government and congress party but also parliament demanding enactment of a Lok Pal Bill, which if passed would become highest authority in country undermining parliament and all other democratically elected institutions.

They argue that had Premier Singh acted in the initial stage of 2G spectrum scam, situation would not have gone so bad. They also accused Singh of turning blind eye even when the issue started coming into open by not taking any action. Similar is the case of large scale corruption in the Common Wealth Games. Why Suresh Kalmadi was given sweeping powers to run the show alone that led to the corruption.

Only one point on which whole party leadership is united is damage control. The CWC discussed the issue as to how the deteriorating image of the party be restored to boost the morale of the party workers before the UP assembly election to take on both the ruling Bahujan Samaj Party and Samajwadi Party.
