A report of the World Health Organisation (WHO) has highlighted significant impacts of ‘Har Ghar Jal’ Programme on public health and economic savings. The report on ‘Har Ghar Jal’ estimates that ensuring safely managed drinking water for all households in the country could avert nearly four lakh deaths caused by diarrheal diseases and prevent approximately 14 million Disability Adjusted Life Years related to these diseases. This achievement alone would result in estimated cost savings of up to 101 billion US dollar.

The ‘Har Ghar Jal’ report focuses on diarrheal diseases as they contribute significantly to the overall disease burden related to water, sanitation, and hygiene issues. Dr. Richard Johnston and Dr. Sophie Boisson of the WHO South East Asia presented the report titled ‘Health impact of Jal Jeevan Mission’.

FILE PICPrime Minister Narendra Modi has said that the Jal Jeevan Mission was envisioned to ensure that every Indian has access to clean and safe water, which is a crucial foundation for public health. Sharing the tweet of Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Mr Modi said, the Government will continue to strengthen this Mission and boosting the healthcare system. Mr Shekhawat said, what better news in this Amrit Kaal than to know that India is growing healthier and stronger thanks to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s pet project of Jal Jeevan Mission.

Speaking in New Delhi, Dr V K Paul, Member (Health), NITI Aayog said that the country is witnessing the role of safe drinking water in saving lives, empowering women and girls, and contributing to ease of living. AIR correspondent reports that the Har Ghar Jal Programme, implemented by the Jal Jeevan Mission under the Ministry of Jal Shakti, was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 15th of August, 2019. The program aims at providing every rural household with affordable and regular access to an adequate supply of safe drinking water through taps.
