Union Minister of Law and Justice, Kiren Rijiju on Saturday called for narrowing the gap between justice delivery systems and the common man, by making it simple and easily accessible. He was delivering the Convocation Address at the National University of Advanced Legal Studies in Kochi Saturday.

The Minister observed that courtrooms need not be the only place from where justice is delivered, it should be delivered at the doorsteps of the people.

Noting that 4.5 crore cases are pending before the courts in the country, he said, better working relationship between the stakeholders will reduce pendency of cases. The Alternative Dispute Resolution mechanisms and the Mediation Bill introduced during the winter session of Parliament will open up a lot of opportunities for lawyers. He lauded the proactive role played by courts in spreading legal awareness.

Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court, Justice S Manikumar, state ministers Dr R Bindu and P Rajeev were among those present.
Later, addressing the South India Level Conference of the Central Government Counsel, Kiren Rijiju said, the government is working to remove more obsolete laws in the country. He observed that India’s success as a democracy owed a great deal to its robust judiciary.
