The Sensex and the Nifty on Friday witnessed modest gains. Both stocks added amid mixed global cues. The Sensex closed near 59,750 points while the Nifty settled near 17,800 level.
The BSE Sensex climbed 143 points, or 0.24 percent to trade at 59,745. The NSE Nifty also rose 67 points, or 0.38 percent, to trade at 17,813.
Asian shares mostly rose, snapping two days of losses. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng gained 1.8 percent, South Korea’s KOSPI rose 1.2 percent and Singapore’s Straits Times added 0.7 percent. Japan’s NIKKEI-225 ended almost flat while China’s Shanghai Composite index fell 0.2 percent. European markets were trading flat in intra-day trade.
Oil prices edged up, heading for their biggest weekly gains since mid-December, fuelled by supply worries amid escalating unrest in Kazakhstan and outages in Libya. Brent crude was trading around 82 dollars and 70 cents per barrel.
In the forex market, the rupee appreciated 19 paise against the US dollar. The domestic unit closed at 74 rupees and 31 paise against the US currency.
