A military plane crashed near Mandalay in Myanmar killing 12 people onboard on Thursday morning. The plane had taken off from the capital city Naypyidaw for the town of Pyin Oo Lwin when it crashed about 300 meters from a steel plant.

The plane was carrying six military personnel and monks who were going to attend a ceremony at a Buddhist monastery, Reuters quoted the local media.

According to Irrawaddy news, well known monk Abhiksheka Maha Rattha Gur Dr. Bhatanda Kavisara from the Zaygone Monastery in Naypyitaw and another monk died in the crash.

One passenger and the pilot of the plane survived the crash. No casualties took place on the ground.
