AMUThe Aligarh Muslim University AMU has revoked the suspension of two Kashmiri students following an internal probe and protest from different quarters including leaders from Jammu and Kashmir.

However, the sedition cases registered against them by the UP police have not been withdrawn yet.

The suspension of Waseem Ayoub Malik (Phd, Biochemistry) and Abdul Haseeb Mir (Phd, History) has been revoked, as committee did not find any evidence against them, the report quoted the registrar of the university, Abdul Hamid as having said.

The CCTV footage of the lawn where the students had gathered is not available, he said.

He said that cameras’ directions are towards the entry of Kennedy hall, which can not cover the lawn area.

Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik’s office had discussed the matter of safety of Kashmiri students at the university with the Uttar Pradesh government.

Jammu and Kashmir governor Satya Pal Malik had said that his administration has taken up the issue of the well-being of Kashmiri students studying in Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) with the Uttar Pradesh government.

The students were suspended for allegedly trying to hold a funeral prayer for deceased Hizbul Mujahideen militant Mannan Bashir Wani who was a former AMU student.

The university had formed a three-member fact-finding committee, which concluded that “their act or conduct does not call for suspension”, said and AMU official.

Mannan Bashir Wani was a scholar at the Aligarh Muslim University before joining the militancy in January. He was among two Hizbul Mujahideen militants killed in an encounter in Handwara town last week. After news of Wani’s death reached them, the two students took to social media to call the university’s Kashmiri students for a meeting near the library.

As they gathered to hold funeral prayers, university staff and student union leaders tried to stop them, leading to a heated exchange, university’s spokesperson Professor Shafey Kidwai had said.

Peoples Democratic Party chief Mehbooba Mufti sought the withdrawal of the sedition charges and revocation of the suspension order. “Centre must intervene in withdrawing cases against students and AMU authorities must revoke their suspension,” the former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister tweeted. “The respective state governments outside Jammu and Kashmir should be sensitive to the situation and prevent further alienation.”
