President Ram Nath Kovind and the First Lady reached Cyprus Sunday on the first leg of their three-nation visit. Soon after reaching here president tweeted “Happy to begin my visit to Cyprus, one of our closest and most steadfast partners in the international community. My delegation and I bring warm and friendly currents from the Indian Ocean to the waters of the Mediterranean. Looking forward to a productive visit”.
Georgios Lakkotrypis, Minister of Energy, Commerce, Industry and Tourism of Cyprus, received them at Larnaca International Airport.
President was given Indian community reception in the capital city of Nicosia. President Kovind meets the Indian community and said that India is proud of its diaspora and their achievements. “They are true cultural ambassadors of India and will deepen our ties with Cyprus”
Around 6000 Indians, including students, live in Cyprus working in various sectors.
Today Mr. Kovind will call on the President of Cyprus Mr. Nicos Anastasiades.
The meeting will be followed by delegation level talks and the signing of agreements and MoUs.
The President will also address an extraordinary session of the house of representatives of Cyprus tomorrow.
The current visit of the Indian President to Cyprus is taking place after 2009 when the then President, Pratibha Devisingh Patil visited Cyprus.
In 2015, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had met the President of Cyprus on the sidelines of United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in 2015. President of Cyprus Mr. Nicos Anastasiades had paid a state visit to India last year.
