Supreme Court of India Supreme court today adjourned hearing on petitions challenging constitutional validity of Article 35 A to second week of January 2019.
Earlier, the Centre and Jammu and Kashmir government referred to upcoming local body polls in state and sought adjournment of hearing on petitions against Article 35A.
The Article bars outsiders from buying immovable property in the state. It empowers the Jammu and Kashmir legislature to define the states permanent residents and their special rights.
The state government told the Apex court that any debate and discussion on Article 35 A has direct repercussions on law and order situation in the state.
The Attorney General said that Let elections be held peacefully. If sensitive issues come up, there would be law and order problem. Local body polls will be held in 8 phases. They would begin from Sept and continue till December.
