According to North Korea’s state media Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has expressed his willingness to visit the North to meet its leader Kim Jong Un.

The ruling Workers’ Party newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, reported in its Sunday edition that Assad had conveyed this to the North Korean ambassador to Syria.

The 2 countries have maintained friendly relations.

The newspaper says the newly-appointed North Korean diplomat presented his credentials to Assad last Wednesday.

Assad reportedly told the ambassador that significant, positive developments are happening on the Korean Peninsula under Kim’s leadership.

He reportedly said the Syrian government will continue to provide total support for all the policies and measures of the North Korean leadership.

As a historic summit with US President Donald Trump coming closer, Kim is accelerating moves to cement ties with countries that have traditionally been the North’s allies.

Arrangements are underway for a visit to the North by Chinese President Xi Jinping. A summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to be held by the year-end.
