At least 30 people have been killed and several injured after dam collapsed in southern Brazil’s Rio Grande do Sul state. The dam was collapsed after days of heavy rain that caused massive flooding. According to reports, about 15,000 residents have fled their homes while thousands of people are without power and clean water across the state.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has visited the region, promising help from the central government. The extreme weather has been caused by a rare combination of hotter than average temperatures, high humidity and strong winds. Brazil’s weather agency has predicted further rains for the next couple of days.
