All three Indian seafarers who were initially reported missing after the attack on the Palau-flagged tanker MT Settebello off the coast of Oman have now been confirmed dead, according to Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal.
In a statement on social media, Sonowal said the bodies of the three crew members had been located and identified. Expressing deep sorrow over the tragedy, he described the deaths as a significant loss to the maritime community and assured that the Government of India would provide all necessary assistance to the families of the deceased.
The minister also directed officials to facilitate the immediate repatriation of the 21 rescued Indian crew members and ensure the swift return of the mortal remains of the deceased to India for their final rites.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of External Affairs summoned US Chargé d’Affaires Jason Meeks following the attack on the commercial vessel, which India says was struck off the Omani coast in a suspected US missile strike. Of the 24 Indian nationals on board, 21 were rescued, while the remaining three have now been confirmed dead.
India strongly condemned the attack and voiced concern over the continuing threats to commercial shipping in the region, describing them as a direct consequence of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. New Delhi reiterated its call for an immediate de-escalation of tensions and urged all parties to pursue a diplomatic resolution to restore peace and stability.
The government also stressed that attacks on commercial vessels and civilian infrastructure must cease and called for the restoration of free, safe and unhindered navigation through international waterways in accordance with international law.
