Bangladesh opposition chief whip of national parliament and National Citizen Party (NCP) convener Nahid Islam on Saturday accused Nobel peace prize laureate Muhammad Yunus-led Bangladesh’s former interim government of “engineering the process” to transfer power to the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), alleging that it subsequently withdrew from responsibility.

“We are concerned about the country’s situation. The interim government engineered the process, handed over power to the BNP, and left,” Nahid told reporters, adding that the party was now moving to scrap key ordinances.
He also urged Muhammad Yunus to actively engage on reform issues. “On the question of reforms, we call on Dr Yunus to take to the field. His advisers must also speak out,” he said.

Criticising the BNP, Nahid claimed that despite securing a two-thirds majority, the party lacked public backing due to its stance on reforms. “Even after securing two-thirds of the seats, the people are not with the BNP,” he said.
The NCP leader further said that members of the interim administration could not simply return to their professions. “They will also have to answer to the people,” he added.

Alleging that the interim government had failed to meet public expectations, Nahid said it was formed on the “sacrifice of the people” and must now step forward to safeguard its achievements.

He made the remarks after returning to Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Saturday afternoon following Umrah in Saudi Arabia.
