Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expressed deep grief over the Utkal Express Derailment at Khatauli in Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh and announced ex-gratia for deceased Odia passengers, if any.

According to reports, while the kin of the dead Odias (if any) will get Rs 5 lakh compensation, the injured persons (Odias) will get Rs 50k for treatment.

At least 20 bodies were recovered from the spot till the filing of the reports. However, the identities of the deceased are yet to be established. The death toll is likely to go up as the NDRF team along with the ATS of Uttar Pradesh is still carrying out the rescue operations.

PM Narendra Modi also expressed his sadness over the train accident and directed officials to speed up the rescue operation.

Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu also announced ex-gratia of Rs.3.5 Lakh for those who lost their lives and Rs.50k for the injured in the mishap.
