In a significant improvement in ties, United States has updated gas-turbine technology transfer policy with India. As a result, US will be able to expand cooperation with India in production and design of sensitive jet engine components.
Indian Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar was informed about this decision by US Defence Secretary Ashton Carter during their meet in Pentagon yesterday.
The two leaders discussed ways and means to move the ambitious Defence Technology and Trade Initiative (DTTI) forward. In an interaction with the media, Parrikar said, their desire is to further collaborate in the higher-end technologies within the framework of DTTI.
Parrikar also informed Carter about India’s decision to participate in the Rim-of-the-Pacific (RIMPAC) multilateral naval exercise next year. The Indian Air Force will also participate in the multilateral Red Flag exercise in April-May 2016.
India’s decision was welcomed by Carter who expressed support for greater Air-to-Air interaction in the future. Carter also announced US participation in the International Fleet Review of the Indian Navy at Visakhapatnam in February next year.
Mr Parrikar was also given a rare insight into USS Dwight D Eisenhower, one of America’s top nuclear powered aircraft carriers, signalling the emerging close Indo-US defence ties.
