Muslim Man Killed by Mob Near Delhi Over Beef Rumours

Uttar Pradesh government has announced Rs 10 ​lakh compensation for the family of a 58-year-old man who was beaten to death and his son injured by a mob ​in Bisada village of Greater Noida ​following rumours that their family was involved in the slaughter of a cow.

Chief minister Akhilesh Yadav has asked the district magistrate and senior superintendent of police, Noida to provide full protection to the family of the victim. A magisterial inquiry has been ordered into the incident.

Elderly man Ekhlaq was killed by a mob on Monday night following rumours of cow slaughter in his house. SP (rural) ​Gautam Budh Nagar said an FIR had been filed against 10 people, six of whom were nabbed and put behind bars.
Reacting to the incident, Congress has alleged that such communal incidents are bound to escalate in the run up to the Bihar elections. Party spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi condemned it saying that it is shocking that such an incident is happening on the outskirts of Delhi.

The CPI(M) Polit Bureau has condemned the incident. In a statement, the party alleged that the horrible incident is the outcome of a sustained communal campaign again cow slaughter and and beef consumption. The party has urged the Uttar Pradesh government to crack down against all those indulging in such communal propaganda.

Union Minister Mahesh Sharma has termed the Dadri incident as painful and said that the incident happened due to misunderstanding. Mr Sharma while reacting to the incident trashed suggestions that it was done to polarise the village ahead of panchayat polls.

Talking to media on the sidelines of a function in New Delhi, Mr Sharma said that he is in touch with the Uttar Pradesh police and has also organised a meeting between the two rival groups in the village, where tension prevailed after the incident on Monday night. Appealing for calm, he said that nobody should take law into his hand.
