After meeting the kin of victims of Sonbhadra violence, Priyanka Gandhi, said, “My objective has been served as I have met them.I am still under detention, let’s see what the administration says. Earlier today, three relatives of Sonbhadra firing victims managed to enter Chunar guesthouse and meet Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi, minutes after she told media that some family members had arrived in Mirzapur but were stopped from meeting her. Reacting on the detention of leaders, Gandhi said, “This is what BJP is; this is what they’ve always been. I’ve been saying this even before elections; they’re undemocratic.” The Congress leader further said that her party, however, stands by the poor.

One of the family member of the victims of Sonbhadra firing incident says, “We got to know that Priyanka didi has come to meet us, but administration has arrested her and taken her to a place where no one can meet her. So, we decided to come and meet her in Chunar.”

Uttar Pradesh BJP president Swatantra Dev Singh today lashed out at Priyanka Gandhi and asked her to stop the drama. He said that the Congress leader is free to go anywhere except Sonbhadra.

The Truth Can Only Come From Judicial Inquiry: AAP Leader | Aam Aadmi Party leader Sanjay Singh said, “Without the involvement of the Yogi Adityanath and Uttar Pradesh government, the genocide of innocent tribals was not possible in Sonbhadra. The truth can only come from judicial inquiry. The arrest of opposition leaders is condemnable. This only proves that the Uttar Pradesh government is hiding something.”

Congress general secretary in-charge Uttar Pradesh-West Jyotiraditya Scindia said the action was “open disrespect” of democracy. “Meeting families of victims and expressing condolences is the responsibility of public representatives. The government has attempted to crush democracy which is highly condemnable,” he said in a tweet in Hindi.

“By arresting Priyanka Gandhi, keeping her in Chunar, will the UP government be able to cover up the killing of 10 people of a tribal family in Sonbhadra?” Congress’ chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala asked in a tweet in Hindi.

Asked to comment, UP Deputy Chief Minister Dinesh Sharma told reporters, “Whether it is the ruling party or the opposition, everyone’s collective responsibility is to ensure that the situation does not aggravate further.”
