The United Nations Security Council is holding an emergency meeting on Tuesday to discuss the violence along the Gaza-Israeli border.
More than 50 Palestinians died after Israeli forces fired on people who were protesting Monday’s opening of the US embassy in Jerusalem.
Kuwait called the session, but it may be hard for the Security Council to take any specific action to quell the situation.
The members of the Security Council are likely to condemn Israel or express concern over Israel’s handling of the protesters. But the United States is expected to back Israel and hold the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas responsible for the violence.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres issued a statement through his spokesperson on Monday, expressing deep concern about the developments in Gaza and urging both sides to show restraint to avoid further loss of life.
