The United States and Iran carried out military strikes over the weekend in the vicinity of the Strait of Hormuz, escalating tensions in the region.

The US Central Command confirmed that American forces targeted Iranian radar and drone command-and-control sites in Goruk and on Qeshm Island. The strikes were described as defensive, following Iran’s downing of a US MQ-9 drone operating over international waters.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced a retaliatory strike on an air base it claimed was involved in an attack on a telecommunications tower on Sirik Island. Tehran did not disclose the location of the base or the results of its strike.

Regional tensions widened as Kuwait’s military activated air defence systems on Monday after detecting incoming missiles and drones. The Kuwaiti army said explosions heard by residents were the result of interception efforts. No casualties or damage have been reported, and flights were diverted from Kuwaiti airspace as a precaution. No group has claimed responsibility for the attempted attacks on Kuwait.

Despite the military exchanges, diplomatic contacts continue. US President Donald Trump said he is close to reaching “a very good deal” with Iran, though reports in American media suggest he is pressing for tougher terms than previously discussed. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed that messages are being exchanged but emphasized that no agreement can be considered final until formally concluded.

Meanwhile, Israel’s expanding ground invasion of Lebanon has drawn international criticism. France has requested an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council to address the situation.
