US President Donald Trump, who has attacked China on issues from trade to the South China Sea, held his first face-to-face talks with a member of the Chinese leadership.
State Councilor Yang Jiechi, China’s top diplomat, met Mr Trump yesterday briefly after talks with the new National Security adviser HR McMaster and other officials of White House.
White House spokesman Sean Spicer said at a news briefing that it was an opportunity to discuss shared interests of national security. China’s Foreign Ministry said, Yang told President Trump that China is willing to enhance exchanges with the US at all levels, expand co-ordination and co-operation, and respect each other’s core interests and major concerns.
A senior US administration official said, discussions were held on bilateral co-operation and the possibility of arranging a meeting between Mr Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping.
